Provident Insurance was originally established in 1966 under the name of Halifax Insurance LTD, insuring motorbikes and three wheelers. The very first insurance policy was for a Lambretta Scooter from 1st July 1966.
In 1978 we were acquired by Provident Financial. This enabled us to develop and grow the business with the strength of a plc behind us.
The 1990's was the period that saw most change for our company. In 1992 we changed our name to Halifax Insurance plc. We then sold our name to Halifax Building Society (HBOS) in 1994 and adopted the name of our parent company, becoming Provident Insurance plc.
In 1994 we were the first motor insurance company to gain the Investor In People award. We pride ourselves on having maintained these high standards over a duration of 13 years.
2005 was without doubt our best year to date:
In June 2007 we became part of the GMAC Group of companies, one of the world's largest financial service organisations.
In June 2011, we became part of Covéa a leading French mutual insurance group, with 10.6 million members and customers and 25,000 employees. In the UK we are a subsidiary of MMA Holdings UK plc and a sister company to both MMA Insurance Ltd and Swinton Group.
